GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – An election observer challenging the results of a Green Bay City Council race made new allegations in a filing with the Wisconsin Elections Commission.
Steven Campbell lost the District 6 aldermanic race by 15 votes, and asked for a recount. He still lost. In a complaint with the WEC, David VanderLeest, Campbell’s representative at the count, raised several issues. He asked for the results to be nullified and new election ordered. The city replied, maintaining it handled the count correctly, and asked for the case to be dismissed.
In his response dated Thursday but posted Monday on the WEC website, VanderLeest claimed the “ballot was stuffed at Ward 21” for Joey Prestley; that city Clerk Celestine Jeffreys “lost two “qualifying sticks”” from the spring election; and that poll observers are listed as unaffiliated but are actually Democrats.
VanderLeest also makes a plea to the WEC:
“Thank you for your time and I beg you all to do the right thing for the citizens of Green Bay. Please investigate this matter fully with all your resources, which are much more vast than my own. Please correct what is under your authority, and then please refer this matter to the Brown County district attorney,” he wrote.
The city requested he be fined $500 for filing a frivolous complaint. VanderLeest called that “an unintelligible request meant to disenfranchise private citizens and election observers who bring real and tangible complaints, backed up by evidence, like the case before you today.”
The city has not responded to this filing. The WEC has not taken any action in the case.
