OCONTO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Oconto city attorney Frank Calvert is prohibited from owning firearms for a year after he was convicted of slightly injuring two people while target practicing with his rifle on Thanksgiving Day.
Calvert pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor counts of endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon. He was originally charged with felony counts of recklessly endangering safety.
He was also ordered to pay $2,842.12 in restitution, as well as pay $2,500 to the crime prevention fund by Kewaunee County Judge Jeffrey Wisnicky.
Before the sentence was issued, Calvert apologized for his actions. As an avid hunter, he said he understands and respects gun safety.
“It’s crazy to me” that the incident ended up how it did, with the bullets causing that impact, Calvert said. He won’t do target practice in that area again.
“It just didn’t seem like it was anything out of normal that we did that day. But I do apologize to everyone on what took place. It really was not our intention that day at all. I apologize,” Calvert said.
According to the criminal complaint, an Oconto resident complained that a bullet came through the window of his residence. Police heard gun shots, and located Calvert in his backyard with an “AR-15 carbine style rifle.” One woman was struck by shattered glass and suffered wounds on her face. The caller was struck by the bullet in his shoulder, where he had a small burn.
Calvert showed the officers where he was shooting, his targets, weapon and ammunition.
“Frank advised he had witnessed his rounds impacting the ground behind the targets and found it hard to believe a round had traveled far enough to strike a residence to the northeast. The orientation of the targets and the direction of fire from the patio was consistent with the trajectory a stray round would have had to travel to impact the residence at the original call address,” the complaint states.
