SHAWANO COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) –October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Safe Haven is a shelter in Shawano working around the clock to offer the community resources and a safe space.
“Especially during this month, we take the time to identify needs, spread awareness and educate about domestic violence,” said Executive Director of Safe Haven, Mindy Lohff. “Wisconsin ranks among the highest in domestic violence within the nation.”
A report from End Domestic Abuse Wisconsin cites domestic violence as responsible for 85 deaths in 2023.
The shelter works alongside law enforcement on a daily basis.
“Family violence affects so many people, including in Shawano County. Safe Haven provides services to the victims that our officers deal with,” said Sheriff George Lenzner. “If we didn’t have Safe Haven, there wouldn’t be a lot we could do for these victims.”
Safe Haven features an 8-bedroom shelter that can serve 25 people at full capacity. The emergency shelter is open 24/7, 365 days a year.
They also have an extensive outreach program which offers advocacy, outreach, and services to help survivors on their healing path.
Safe Haven will be hosting an event in November that gives law enforcement the chance to enjoy a magical evening.
Ball of the Badges will be held on Friday, Nov. 15. The event is also a fundraiser for Safe Haven.
The shelter is looking for businesses to help sponsor a table for first responders.
