DOOR COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Door County officials are urging residents and merchants to be cautious when handling large bills after reports of “prop cash” circulating in the community.
According to a Facebook post Wednesday from the Door County Sheriff’s Office, authorities have received reports of motion picture prop currency, also known as prop cash.
This commercially-produced money is often used as props in movies and television shows. Although not exact replicas, the bills look similar enough to authentic cash that they may be mistaken as legal tender, if not carefully examined.
To ensure your cash is legitimate, the Sheriff’s Office says you should be extra cautious when handling cash, especially large bills. Look for signs of counterfeit bills, such as:
- Abnormal textures
- Off-center images
- Missing security features like watermarks
- Color-shifting ink
- Words printed on the bill such as “Copy”; “For Motion Picture Use Only”; or “This Note Is Not Legal Tender”
If you suspect you’ve received counterfeit money, do not try to use it, officials say.
