(WTAQ-WLUK) — Thanks to a federal grant, mental health and substance abuse disorder services will expand at eight community health centers across the state, including two in Northeast Wisconsin.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced nearly $4.7 million will go to help community centers integrate mental health and substance use disorder treatment into primary care.
This includes $600,000 in funding for N.E.W. Community Clinic in Green Bay and $600,000 for Partnership Community Health Care in Appleton.
Other Wisconsin centers receiving funds are:
- Access Community Health Centers, Inc. in Madison
- Community Health Systems Inc. in Beloit
- Lakeshore Community Health Care Inc. in Sheboygan
- Primary Connection Healthcare, Inc. in Wausau
- Progressive Community Health Centers, Inc. in Milwaukee
- Scenic Bluffs Health Center Inc. in Cashton
Health centers are trusted community providers and a primary source of care for individuals who are uninsured, underinsured, or enrolled in Medicaid.
The State of Mental Health in America 2024 report demonstrates the need to expand services, finding that the vast majority of people with a substance use disorder in the U.S. are not receiving treatment, 1 in 5 youth had at least one major depressive episode in the last year—with over half not receiving treatment, and 10% of adults with a mental illness are uninsured.
