GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An affordable housing project celebrated its completion with a block party Tuesday.
The Brown County United Way and the city of Green Bay invited the community to get a peek inside the new City East Center and City East Apartments, embedded into the Joannes Park Neighborhood at 1165 E. Walnut Street.
The three-story building, located at 1165 E. Walnut Street, features 43 units, with one-, two- and three-bedroom offerings. Thirty-six of those units will be set aside for households making less than 60% of the area’s median income. Rents will range from $430 a month to $1,400 for a market-rate unit.
The project also includes a new 5,000 square-foot community space where nonprofits and the Brown County United Way can collaborate, find assistance and build relationships with neighbors.
The space is the first permanent home of the Brown County United Way in the organization’s 99-year history.
CEO of Brown County United Way, Robyn Davis, says projects like these strengthen communities.
“This center, The City East Center, represents a new era of our approach to our strategic investment of time, talent and organizational resources, particularly since 2017, so I see our team, they’re going yes it does, right? The focus on individuals and households living beneath or below the ALICE threshold amplifying the reality that one in three households struggle to meet their basic needs connecting with and supporting Brown County residents where they live, work and gather and ensuring our future relevance and sustainability,” she said.
The $10 million project was funded in part through the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA), as well as WEDA tax credits and other grants and donations.
