MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WRN) — A judge has upheld a partial veto from Governor Tony Evers that modified school funding.
Dane County Judge Stephen Ehlke ruled Tuesday that the bills Governor Evers used his partial veto on were budget and appropriations bills and thus subject to the partial veto.
That means the Governor can strike out parts of sentences and string together different plans.
In this case, Evers turned a bill that would have increased funding on school literacy into a general spending increase for the Department of Public Instruction, while also cutting grants for school vouchers and private schools.
The judge also ruled that the legislature’s joint finance committee still had the right to decide how to distribute the original $50 million in literacy funding.
