WISCONSIN (WTAQ-WLUK) – Vice President Kamala Harris has said, with President Biden dropping out of the race, she will seek the Democratic nomination for President.
Harris did get an endorsement from President Biden on Sunday. And on Monday morning, Wisconsin Governor Tony Evers announced he was supporting the vice president too.
“The Democratic Party of Wisconsin’s governing body has voted unanimously to officially endorse Kamala Harris for President of the United States,” said Ben Wikler, chair of the Democratic Party of Wisconsin.
Wikler added,
“Wisconsin Democrats are united, fired up, and ready to deliver Wisconsin for Vice President Kamala Harris. Already, Vice President Harris has won endorsements from Governor Evers, Tammy Baldwin, and every other statewide elected Democrat, as well as elected Democrats at all levels and grassroots leaders and activists across the state. We’ve seen record-breaking fundraising, with Wisconsin Democrats raising more than $140,000 in just 24 hours. There’s no one better prepared to prosecute the case against Donald Trump than Vice President Harris, and our endorsement makes it official: Wisconsin Democrats are all in for Kamala Harris.”
That news came about 24 hours after President Biden said he would not be seeking re-election.
Local democrats accepting of the President’s decision.
“It looks like he made the choice, that the best way for us to win in November is to put the rise to the first woman of color ever nominated for the democratic ticket and so it continues to be an incredible moment,” said Amaad Rivera-Wagner.
He’s is a local delegate from Green Bay who will represent Northeast Wisconsin at the Democratic National Convention next month. As such, he says he’s prepared to support Vice President Harris, making her the party’s nominee.
According to Rivera-Wagner, “I was a pledged Biden-Harris and signed paperwork that said and ran as a Biden-Harris delegate, so for me, if the wishes of President Biden is to support VP Harris to this next position, that makes perfect sense to me. It’s exciting to see the first woman of color rise to the moment, rise to that occasion and frankly continuing the kind of momentous administration that’s delivered on really incredible things for here in Green Bay.”
Those sentiments carrying south into Outagamie County too.
“I do think she can beat Donald Trump. She has an incredible record as AG in California, also as a US Senator, and so I’m really excited for any policy she may continue on because she was obviously part of the Biden administration that accomplished so much. So yes, I think she can unify us,” said Emily Tseffos, chair of the Democratic Party of Outagamie County.
The Biden-Harris campaign signs may have come down, as the party waits for the official nominee, but democrats are excited about the possibilities moving forward with a new candidate.
And while Vice President Harris has support here in Wisconsin, and wouldn’t officially become the nominee until after the DNC, Democrats just want to make sure they keep Donald Trump out of the White House.
Tseffos added, “I can tell you that whoever that nominee is we’re going to be doing the work for them and we’re going to get them elected in November.”
