FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – About 1,700 workers at Mercury Marine have partial layoffs the rest of the year, as the company continues to cope with declining sales.
In June, the company announced 300 workers would lose their jobs. At the time, the company also said there would be “workforce adjustments” at plants in Fond du Lac and elsewhere.
Now, the details of those adjustments are outlined in a memo. It lists dates for Plant 15 hourly workers to have two-week ‘short-term layoffs’ on workdays from July 1-12, Aug. 26-Sept. 6, Sept. 23-Oct. 4, and Oct. 21-Nov. 1.
Some employees may be offered work in the windows, the memo states.
“These are not permanent layoffs, but days we are not manufacturing which means the impacted employees are not working those days,” said Lee Gordon, vice president of corporate communications. “It does impact the majority of our hourly population in Fond du Lac.”
Workers can file for employment during those windows. Gordon said.
Mercury Marine is the county’s largest employer, with more than 3,000 workers.
