WAUPACA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A ribbon cutting ceremony Monday celebrated the completion of the Humane Society of Waupaca County’s expansion project.
Officials broke ground on the new 1,700 square foot Well-Pet Center in Nov. 2023. It features an exam room, X-ray room, surgery/recovery room, pharmacy and kennel space.
“We decided to actually build a vet clinic of our own, which is what the Well-Pet Center is,” said Steven Petersen, vice president and secretary of the Humane Society of Waupaca County.
“So we can help all people; however, we’ve been noticing that lower and middle income people are struggling with trying to keep up with pet costs. We’re going to try and offer them some options to try to keep the costs down so they can keep their furry, lovable animals that they love and cherish and keep them healthy,” Petersen continued.
Currently, the Well-Pet Center is offering spays and neuters. Eventually, it will add more services like vaccinations, heartworm testing and microchipping. The facility will serve not only residents in Waupaca County, but surrounding counties as well.
“This is going to go a long way towards helping the local populous with low cost vaccinations and of course, the biggest issues is spays and neuters,” Petersen said.
He added that the Well-Pet Center will work with dog and cat rescues in central Wisconsin, providing the necessary medical care to prepare the animals for adoption.
The Humane Society started 25 years ago renting an old warehouse on the west side of town… We had put up our original shelter building in 2004, and by the early 20-teens, we realized that we were out of space and that there was more need than what we had for space… Now we’ve got this new building and we’re in good shape… We’re really excited about our new building.
Petersen said $100,000 in donations is still needed to finish off the funding for the expansion project. Donations can be made online on the shelter’s website or by mailing a check/cash to this address: 2293 Commercial Drive, Waupaca, WI 54981.
