OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) โ Menominee Parkโs Pratt Trail has fully reopened to the public โ with the remains of a Native American village preserved underneath.
The road had been closed since last August when archaeological items of significance were found during construction. The city of Oshkosh worked with University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee experts and representatives of local tribal nations to make sure the work complied with state laws aimed at protecting historical sites.
The site was believed to be inhabited between the years 900 and 1600.
Road work replaced stormwater infrastructure, including curb and gutter repair, and laid new asphalt pavement along the entire length of the road. Visitors are asked to avoid areas where there is newly planted grass near Platt Trail.
The reopening comes just in time for the Fourth of July fireworks show at Menominee Park.
While Pratt Trail was closed, events such as the Oshkosh Celebration of Lights, Brews at the Zoo and Zooloween Boo were held elsewhere. Organizers of the Celebration of Lights moved to the EAA grounds last year, and have decided to hold the event there through 2028.
