GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – New additions to a downtown Green Bay dog park are enhancing the space for both people and pooches.
Vital Essentials Dog Park, located in Green Bay’s Broadway District, unveiled several fresh features Thursday.
One of those amenities is an A-frame structure, commonly found in agility or obstacle courses — providing dogs with opportunities for fun and fitness. A permanent shade structure has also been added to offer pups and their owners a cool retreat on warm, sunny days.
Another new addition is a tennis ball library, which is a playful twist on the “Free Little Libraries” concept. It encourages the community-sharing of tennis balls. An interactive mural, created by local artist Andrew Linskens, brings vibrant colors and creativity to the park. Additionally, a Broadway District business provided clover — a low maintenance, drought tolerant, sustainable and dog-friendly surface.
Brian Johnson, who serves on Green Bay’s City Council and as the executive director of On Broadway, Inc., spoke about why having dog parks like this is so important.
“65% of homes in the U.S. have a dog, and so if you just extrapolate that number to this area here, that means we have a lot of dogs that live nearby but no place to exercise,” Johnson said. “The city of Green Bay has one dog park. This makes two.”
Officials say the Vital Essentials Dog Park has become a favorite spot for many local pet owners since it opened last fall. The park has fencing around the perimeter with a double gated entry, wind screens, seating, a waste station and a water drinking area.
