GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — The Green Bay Area Public School District will start the 2024-2025 school year under the direction of interim superintendent Vicki Bayer.
The Board of Education hasn’t even started its search for a new superintendent.
For the second time in two years, Bayer is the interim superintendent for the Green Bay Area Public School District. Bayer assumed the role, again, in February, after the resignation of Claude Tiller, who had only been on the job for about eight months.
His resignation meant the district would be looking for its sixth superintendent in six years.
“We’re very fortunate that while we’re searching we can take our time to do the search the right way and are in very capable hands with somebody as highly qualified as Vicki Bayer,” said board member Andrew Becker. “We have a fairly new board with a lot of new members, so I think going into that search making sure we as a board are looking at what our priorities are, that’s going to help make sure the next superintendent is a good match.”
New board member Rick Crosson says the board is working on a comprehensive plan — looking to the district’s future — coming up with updated idea and concepts for where it would like to see the district in the next five, 10, 20 years and beyond. It’s his understanding the plan would be presented to prospective superintendent candidates to see how they would implement the strategies to move the district forward.
In a text message responding to an inquiry about the search, board president Laura McCoy said, “We’ve been focusing on so many other things having to do with finishing the school year strong and also our district consolidation work.”
“I think we WILL start that conversation later in the summer,” she added.
“We absolutely need to fill the position, but I think taking our time is probably the best approach to find the best and most appropriate and qualified candidates,” said Brent Bergstrom, president of the Green Bay Education Association.
Bergstrom is confident not only in interim superintendent Bayer, but also the board’s decision to not fast-track the hiring of her replacement.
“I’m not concerned right now and I’m cautiously optimistic with all of the things that are going on and have been going on over the past year to kind of continue to grow and improve the district,” he said.
Board members say they anticipate opening the job search some time this fall.
