SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Sheboygan County has a new sheriff in town.
On Tuesday, Gov. Tony Evers announced the appointment of Matthew Spence as Sheboygan County Sheriff. Spence fills the vacancy created by the retirement of former sheriff Cory Roeseler, who retired this month after more than 35 years in law enforcement. Spence will complete the remainder of Roeseler’s unexpired term, which ends in Jan. 2027.
“I am confident that Matt Spence will do a great job as the next sheriff of Sheboygan County,” said Roeseler in a news release. “His education, training and experience has positioned him to successfully lead the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office into the future.”
Spence has spent the entirety of his law enforcement career with the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office. He started as a patrol deputy in 2002, rising through the ranks to become the current captain of the patrol and criminal investigations unit. In that role, he oversaw the annual department budget, coordinated training and supervised all sworn officers.
Spence has also pursued higher education opportunities during his two decades in law enforcement. He earned a master of public administration degree with a law enforcement administration emphasis from UW–Oshkosh and graduated from the FBI National Academy in 2022.
“With more than two decades of service in the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office, Matthew Spence is an experienced law enforcement officer who is committed to his community. I am confident he will serve the people of Sheboygan County well as their next sheriff,” Gov. Evers said in a statement.
Spence is also actively involved in the community, serving as a Special Olympics coach and coordinated the law enforcement torch run. He’s coached youth soccer and was the 2019 recipient of the Sheboygan County Civic Achievement Award.
“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve with the men and women of the Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office,” Spence said. “I look forward to overcoming the challenges ahead as we strive to provide quality services to the citizens of Sheboygan County.”
