FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A bridge of opportunity is now open for pedestrians in Fond du Lac.
The city held a ribbon cutting ceremony Thursday to celebrate the opening of the Lakeside Park pedestrian bridge.
The bridge, which sits 18 feet above the water line over the Fond du Lac river, connects Lakeside Park and Lakeside Park West.
Officials say it’s the first time visitors of Lakeside Park can travel from Lighthouse Peninsula to the boardwalk in Supple Marsh without actually ever having to leave the park.
City council president, Tiffany Brault, says the pedestrian bridge gives visitors a chance to explore some of the most natural parts of the Lake Winnebago shoreline available on the west side of the park. The west side also includes a dog park and various walking trails.
The bridge itself also offers one-of-a-kind views.
“I spoke with three women this morning actually before the ribbon cutting, they were just randomly walking out here and I just went up and asked, ‘how do you like it?’ And they’re like, this is amazing. The views, it gives you a different perspective of Lake Winnebago and also the river and our parks and they just couldn’t say enough good things about it,” said Fond du Lac director of public works, Paul DeVries.
While the bridge is open to pedestrian traffic, DeVries says recent weather has prevented crews from finishing some concrete work and other finishing touches. He asks those who use to the bridge in the coming weeks to be cautious of construction areas as work wraps up.
