GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – After a stretch of rainy days, on Wednesday, many Green Bay residents were able to experience the weather they were hoping for on Memorial Day.
“Summer’s in full swing,” Frank Scandin said. “Really kicking it off on the right note. Beautiful weather. I can’t remember a spring that was this warm this early, but obviously the rain’s been unfortunate.”
Like Scandin, who finally made it out onto the Fox River to fish.
“Real windy and Tuesday was pure rain so no it wasn’t an option,” Scandin said.
But recent rains continue to have an impact, even when the skies are clear.
“A pro is it gives you access to rivers that have been low in the past, like even paddling the East River,” Zeller’s Ski and Sports co-owner Dave Zeller said. “The negative part is people sometimes get in over their head, not preparing like for how fast the current is.”
Zeller is reminding outdoor recreation enthusiasts to be aware of what the water will look like following the recent precipitation.
“We educate them on the proper dress and again, looking at the weather and even the right type of boat to be in,” Zeller said.
Zeller said kayakers and water skiers especially may want to be extra cautious after heavy rain.
“Depends on how severe the storm was, but in the case like, we’ve had some pretty significant rainfalls. I was in Door County, which had four inch rainfall. I would say probably a couple days before it would start to settle down.”
That warning is consistent with a message shared by the Wisconsin DNR.
“Any time the ground is saturated and it rains again, that rain tends to run off more quickly and with that, it can bring with it anything that is on the ground,” Marty Nessman with the Wisconsin DNR said. “Before the flood water recedes, it can be kind of a hazard.”
Nessman also recommends avoiding swimming in elevated water levels.
Zeller recommends to download the U.S. Coast Guard app for real-time updates on water conditions and temperatures. Click here to learn more.
