OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A Memorial Day brat fry is helping fund a traveling tribute to Vietnam War veterans.
On Monday, the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 70 held their annual brat fry at the Cook-Fuller American Legion Post 70 in Oshkosh.
“We do this every year to kind of be able to reach out, help out our veterans, get people down to the Post to learn about the American Legion family,” said Rick Helms, the squadron’s commander.
Proceeds raised at the event go toward bringing the “Traveling Wall” from the American Veterans Traveling Tribute to Oshkosh.
An 80% replica of the Vietnam Wall located in Washington, D.C., the Traveling Wall is 360 feet long and measures eight feet tall at the apex. It honors U.S. service members who fought in the Vietnam War, died while serving in Vietnam/Southeast Asia and were unaccounted for (missing in action).
“Every four years, we have the Traveling Vietnam Wall that we sponsor. So we take four years of fundraising to help get that fee covered and make sure that the community and the veterans can come out and pay their respects,” Helms explained.
The wall will be on display at the Sunnyview Expo Center from Oct. 10-13.
