APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Students from around our area had their civic knowledge put to the test on Saturday.
Sixth through eighth grade students participated in the regional level of competition for the National Civics Bee. The Fox Cities Chamber hosted the event at Lawrence University.
The students started with a 500-word essay addressing a problem and solution in their community. Then they answered 10 questions in two rounds. The top six then answered questions from judges.
“Civic knowledge is super important to start a young age so we’re just encouraging them to start at sixth grade in order to form a very well informed citizen,” said Aimee Herrick, the director of events and emerging talent at Fox Cities Chamber.
The top three students walked away with cash prizes, including $500 for first place. Audrie B. took first place, Raluca M. took second place, and Brayden S. took third place.
The state level competition is June 14th.
