APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) โ A man who carjacked a woman and her 4-year-old son in a mall parking lot, driving off with the two of them in the vehicle before they escaped, was sentenced Friday to 30 years in prison.
Jay Scott, 52, was previously convicted of carjacking: possess weapon, theft and bail jumping for the Oct. 2, 2023 incident.
He was also placed on extended supervision for 10 years by Judge Mark Schroeder. Scott bowed and placed his head in hands as the sentence was read.
The victim did not offer comments in court, but Judge Schroeder paraphrased her letter to the court, describing the trauma she suffered as a result of the incident.
Before the sentenced was issued, Scott apologized.
โIโd just like to say that Iโm taking responsibility for what I did. I know it was wrong. And Iโve hurt many people in the process โ the victims, including my own kids. Now, they donโt have a father. I just wanted to apologize and ask to find it in your heart to be lenient with me,โ Scott said.
Judge Schroeder said he realizes the sentence means Scott may spend the rest of his life in prison, but said he cannot give him another opportunity to terrorize the public.
According to the criminal complaint, Scott approached a woman and her 4-year-old child in a parking lot at the Fox River Mall in Grand Chute. He showed a knife, took her car keys, then drove off with the two in the vehicle. The woman and child were eventually able to escape and call police. Scott was later arrested.
