GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — One of the winningest NCAA women’s basketball coaches and a local legend is calling it a career.
During a press conference held at the Kress Center Wednesday, University of Wisconsin-Green Bay women’s basketball coach Kevin Borseth announced he will be retiring.
Borseth recently concluded his 37th season as an NCAA Division I women’s basketball head coach and 21st overall leading Green Bay.
In two stints as head coach of the Phoenix (1998-2007 and 2012-2023), Borseth achieved numerous milestones.
This past season, he collected his 800th NCAA win when Green Bay defeated University of Illinois Chicago 64-56 on Dec. 13. He currently ranks 19th all-time among NCAA women’s basketball coaches in total wins with 821.
Borseth also achieved his 500th win as head coach of Green Bay this past season. He achieved the milestone on Feb. 8 when the Phoenix defeated Northern Kentucky 67-51.
Borseth leaves Green Bay with a 509-146 overall record.
The Phoenix won 16 regular season titles and 14 conference tournament championships with Borseth at the helm.
Green Bay appeared in the NCAA Tournament 13 times under Borseth, leading the Phoenix to the second round twice.
This past season, Green Bay beat Cleveland State 64-40 in the Horizon League Tournament championship to earn its first NCAA Tournament bid since 2018.
Borseth’s head coaching career spans five decades and began at the junior college level. He coached the women’s team at his alma mater,
Gogebic Community College, from 1982–1987.
He then made the jump to the NCAA Division II level, coaching at Michigan Tech from 1987–1998.
During the 1992–93 campaign, Borseth led the Huskies to a 30–3 record en route to a third-place finish in the NCAA Division II Tournament.
Borseth then made the jump to the NCAA Division I level, beginning his first stint in Green Bay from the 1998 to the 2006 season. During that time, he led the Phoenix to a 216–62 record, seven NCAA Tournament appearances and two WNIT bids.
The University of Michigan announced in April 2007 that it had hired Borseth as its new women’s basketball coach.
Borseth spent five seasons as the head coach in Ann Arbor, compiling an 87-73 record. He led the Wolverines to three postseasons, including a trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2012, which was the program’s first since 2000-01 season.
In April 2012, Borseth resigned from his job at Michigan and returned to Green Bay for his second stint leading the Phoenix. Twelve seasons later, he’s led the program to a 303–84 (.783) overall record, six NCAA Tournaments appearances, four WNIT bids, seven regular season conference titles and six conference tournament titles.
Green Bay women’s basketball never had a losing season with Kevin Borseth as head coach.
