BROWN COUNTY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Brown County is getting greener.
Nineteen communities across the county will plant 402 trees, thanks to the Green Bay Packers’ annual “First Downs for Trees” program.
Two nurseries, Meacham Nursery and Leaves Inspired, provided the trees this year, while the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources and Wisconsin Public Service helped administer trees.
DNR urban forestry coordinator, Patricia Lindquist, says it’s a way for the team to give back to the environment.
“With the Packers traveling to away games, there’s a lot of carbon emissions when they’re flying and trees sequester carbon so by planting more trees, you’re sequestering carbon to kind of offset by how much they’re spending,” she explained.
She also says the trees are a welcome sight for communities that lost ash trees due to the invasive emerald ash borer.
The number of trees donated is based on the number of Packers first downs made during the previous season.
