APPLETON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A day after pushing back Gene Meyer’s trial for the 1988 murder of Betty Rolf by a day, next week’s scheduled trial was postponed indefinitely Thursday due to Meyer’s hospitalization.
Meyer, 68, is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree sexual assault for the death of Rolf. Rolf’s body was found Nov. 7, 1988, in Grand Chute, just outside the Appleton city limits. Meyer was charged in December 2022 after DNA from the scene matched evidence taken from Meyer’s truck.
Meyer was scheduled to stand trial Monday. In court Wednesday, Judge Mark Schroeder said Meyer had been hospitalized, and he pushed jury selection to Tuesday. Monday would have been used for several motions which would require Meyer’s presence.
Today, however, the decision was made to cancel the trial due to Meyer’s condition and the uncertainty of his unavailability.
No new date has been scheduled.
