(WTAQ-WLUK) โ After a candidacy announcement Wednesday, two Republican state senators will seemingly be vying for the same Northeast Wisconsin seat.
Under Wisconsinโs recently-passed new legislative maps, Republicans Rob Cowles (District 2), Eric Wimberger (District 30) and Andre Jacques (District 1) all live in District 30. That seat now appears to be more favorable for Democrats.
Jacques is running for the congressional seat vacated by U.S. Rep. Mike Gallagher.
Although Cowles hasnโt officially declared his intentions, last month he said heโs planning to move from his Allouez home of about 25 years to keep representing District 2.
โIโm not happy about it at all, but Iโm more interested in public service and getting things done than I am about being attached to my condo here in Allouez,โ Cowles said Feb. 29.
Wimberger, who currently represents District 30, announced Wednesday that in light of the recent district remapping, he will run for the 2nd Senate District.
Iโm excited about the opportunity to be the conservative voice for my current constituents and new constituents in Northeast Wisconsin. From the north of the district near my familyโs small business, to the very south where the first generation of Wimbergers immigrated to a Kaukauna farm, I have strong vested ties to the area.
I look forward to continuing my effective representation as the Legislative Audit Committee Chairman doing government oversight, and as a member of the Joint Finance Committee organizing the state budget. Iโll also have an opportunity to live closer to the family business, Sweet Memories Candy Shoppe in Lakewood, and help my mom in our 35th year open.
