MENASHA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Declining enrollment and a $3.5 million budget deficit have prompted the closure of an elementary school in Menasha.
Members of the Menasha Joint School District Board of Education voted 7-0 at a meeting Monday night to eliminate Jefferson Elementary School at the end of the academic year. The school serves students in 4K through third grade.
“Closing a school is not an easy process by any stretch and we have a lot of empathy for the families that were impacted by this decision tonight,” said Superintendent Matt Zimmerman. “It’s just unfortunate that we’re in the position of having to do so, given our level of funding from the state.”
Students will move to nearby Butte Des Morts Elementary School next fall, which is large enough to take in the Jefferson population. As for the property itself, the district will retain it and decide what to do with the Jefferson building at a later time.
This is the second closure in the Menasha Joint School District since 2022, when Nicolet Elementary was closed.
