GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Green Bay high school students are embracing black voices and ideas.
East High School hosted its third annual African American Readathon Wednesday as part of its recognition of Black History Month.
Throughout the school day, students and staff volunteers will read aloud various poems, stories, novel passages, and speech excerpts written by African American authors.
The school’s library media specialist, Julie Ollmann, describes it as a marathon of words.
“It’s just a great opportunity for people to hear other voices and to learn from each other. As educators, I think that’s our job to pique the students’ curiosity and I think that’s happened today and hopefully they’ll want to learn more,” she said.
Ollman says some volunteer readers who read last year returned again this year.
