GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – While we’re still left wondering just exactly what Claude Tiller said in his radio interview in Atlanta, one thing is certain: the search will be on for another public school superintendent in Green Bay.
If another leader is hired, it will be the district’s fifth superintendent in the past five years.
For school board candidate Alex Mineau, who is a former teacher, he would like to see the district’s next leader be more local.
“We have a lot of amazing, incredible, educational professionals all throughout this state and this area. Many of which are right in our own school district.”
Out of the approximately 19,000 students in the district, about 38% are white. About 32% are hispanic. African American and Asian students make up about 8% each.
Leaders of minority groups said after Saturday’s special board meeting that it will be difficult to replace Tiller.
“He was creating all of this momentum and making drastic changes. And I think what happened is that the administration and the board was not okay with all the changes that were happening,” said Amanda Garcia, the Executive Director of Casa ALBA Melanie in Green Bay on Saturday. “But that’s exactly why they hired him.”
As some in the community have been critical of the board, current members like Andrew Becker encourage anyone to come forward with issues.
“There are things that I think we need to do better on, any school district needs to do better, I always want to hear peoples concerns,” said Becker after Saturday’s meeting.
Four candidates are running for two open school board positions this spring.
Becker is running as the incumbent.
Mineau, Kou Lee and Paul Boucher are looking to take Nancy Welch’s seat, who decided not to run again.
It’s unclear when the search for the next district leader will officially start, but it’s likely a new board member will eventually play a role in the process.
Vicki Bayer is the deputy superintendent and served as the interim superintendent last school year.
The board has not voted yet for an interim, but as deputy she is second in command per a district spokesperson.
