(WTAQ-WLUK) — Two cities in Wisconsin, including one right in our own background, have been recognized as among the “best places to live” in the United States.
U.S. News & World Report released its list of the “25 Best Places to Live for Quality of Life in the U.S. in 2023-2024.” Madison, Wisconsin’s state capital, ranked third on the list, and Green Bay, home of the green and gold, took the seventh spot.
The “Best Places to Live” report measures how satisfied residents are with their daily lives by metro area. It considers a myriad of factors, including:
- Crime rates
- Quality and availability of health care
- Quality of education
- Average commute time
- Cost of living
- Housing affordability
- Weather temperateness
- Air quality
- Risk of natural hazards
- Unemployment rate
- Average salary
Green Bay received a 7.3 quality of life rating and an 8.0 on the value index, with an overall score of 6.9. Madison’s numbers are 7.4, 6.7 and 6.7 in the same categories.
Among cities with populations under 500,000 residents, Green Bay had the third spot on the list.
Home to one of the most storied football franchises in the NFL, the Green Bay Packers, Green Bay has the perfect mix of big-city amenities complemented with a Midwestern, small-town feel. This city boasts a thriving entertainment and arts scene, revitalized downtown, and two college campuses, creating an energy that may appeal to young families as well as retirees.
Green Bay is located in the heart of northeast Wisconsin and is the state’s oldest settlement. The city’s heart is at the mouth of the Fox River, and its access to the Great Lakes allowed early settlers to use the area’s waterways to become successful entrepreneurs.
While the city continues to be a major shipping center, summertime on the Fox River is alive with waterskiing, riverfront dining and sunset cruises. The Fox River State Trail, a wooded walking and biking trail that runs parallel with the river, is a prominent section of the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon.
You can find boutique shopping and numerous museums throughout the city and surrounding areas. Downtown Green Bay, the Broadway District, downtown De Pere and Vickery Village just north of Green Bay feature shops with antiques, home decor and trendy clothing.
A thriving craft beer industry, an array of restaurant options and its proximity to weekend getaway destination Door County make Green Bay a good place to settle down and stay.
Green Bay topped this same list last year with the number one spot. Another report last year ranked Green Bay as the most affordable city in the U.S.
