KAUKAUNA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – It’s a chance to see and learn about our nation’s symbol.
“Eagle Days” takes place at the 1000 Islands Environmental Center in Kaukauna.
“It’s just a day to celebrate and recognize one of the most spectacular things that we have being along the Fox River here, which is being able to view bald eagles. And it’s a day for us to just get the community out, along with some naturalists, and other volunteers who are familiar with the nesting we have in the area, and try to see some bald eagles that are here,” said Brad Garrity, 1000 Islands Environmental Center site manager.
Garrity says the 1000 Islands Environmental Center in Kaukauna will host the event. He says there will be crafts for kids of all ages, a coloring contest, and three demonstrations from the National Eagle Center.
“They bring a live eagle ambassador with them, and just teach about eagles in general, and let people be up close and personal with one of these really cool birds.”
Garrity says people are able to view eagles on their own, or from three official platforms around the conservancy zone. Nature photographer Bruce Danz checked out the property on Wednesday morning.
“They’re a lot of fun to watch. Very interesting. Huge. And lots of activity. It’s fun to watch them fish. It’s fun to watch them interact. Sometimes they fight with each other. Sometimes they fight with other birds.”
Whether it’s fighting, or looking for food, Garrity says the open water on this section of the Fox River makes 1000 Islands a prime-viewing place.
“They are very opportunistic feeders. Predators for sure. Fish, and small game. But they’ll take food from another bird, or even some road kill, if they find it,” he said.
The 12th Annual Eagle Days takes place on Saturday. It runs from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
