STURGEON BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A childcare center in Door County is more than doubling its capacity, thanks to a state grant.
Governor Tony Evers was in Sturgeon Bay Monday to help cut the ribbon for the new Door Community Child Development Center.
In December of 2021, the center announced it was receiving up to $3.5 million through the governor’s $130 million Workforce Innovation Grant Program to make changes to existing child care facilities in the county.
The grant was used to construct the new 18,600-square-foot center, which is licensed to care for 150 children. The building’s size allows the center enough space to contract with Head Start and area school districts to provide programming and create new revenue streams. The building was also designed with a unique community room, which can be rented out for classes, birthday parties, and other events, as well as a sensory gym space that can be rented.
The Door Community Child Development Center also aims to increase the number of early childhood educators and find suitable housing for those educators.
“Childcare is obviously a very critical issue everywhere in this state and as the governor mentioned, in order to get people back into the workforce, we need good childcare. I think as a society, we haven’t quite figured out how to fund it best. It’s a tough business but this is a wonderful facility and I’m really glad to have it in our community,” said Republican Rep. Joel Kitchens.
As of December 2023, the Door Community Child Development Center was serving 78 kids.
