ASHWAUBENON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — If the bitter cold weather has you going a little stir crazy, why not find a new indoor hobby to fill the time? It’s National Hobby Month, and you’ll find all the inspiration you need at your local library.
Aaron Traeger, an associate at the Brown County Library’s Ashwaubenon branch, suggests the following books and board games to get you started on your journey:
- Quilt with Tula & Angela, Tula Pink (Nonfiction – Quilting) – A fun guide for quilting with a heavy emphasis on color and shape. It’s fun to go through the book and read how each color is described and personified. One example found within is that purple is a moody color that shares a lot with red and blue, and thus makes her confused about herself. She only plays well with others when she is in the right mood. Great photos accompany the text and help to inspire the reader as well.
- Patchwork, A Game by Uwe Rosenberg (Board Game) – The Ashwaubenon Branch Library now has board games and jigsaw puzzles. This is a puzzle board game where players make a beautiful quilt out of tiles that look like patches. Simple to learn but challenging to master, this board game is perfect for quick play sessions.
- My Pokemon Baking Book, Jarrett Melendez (Nonfiction – Cookbook) – Have a hankering for Pikachu Tropical Cupcakes? How about Charmander Brown Butter Marmalade Financiers? If you do, look no further than this cookbook. Many recipes for desserts inspired by Pokemon from the famous video game franchise are included. Great for fans of the video games and for anyone with a sweet tooth.
- Knit a Mini Ocean, Sachiyo Ishii (Nonfiction – Crochet/Sewing) – A cute and easy guide for knitting and crocheting 20 tiny-sized sea creatures. Make your own mini aquarium and fill it with sharks, dolphins, whales, and even mermaids. Basic guides for knitting, crocheting, and embroidery are also included for budding fiber artists.
- Knitting the Neighborhood, Sixth and Spring Books (Nonfiction – Crochet/Sewing) – Fans of Mister Roger’s Neighborhood will love this collection. Cute puppets and cardigans are among the offerings in this book of patterns. This book would be better for a sewer with an intermediate skillset.
Traeger invites you to join them on January 23 at 1:30 p.m at the Ashwaubenon Branch Library for their “The Fascinating World of Quilts” program. Members of the Fiber Artisans of Northeast Wisconsin will be examining the beauty, artistry, and allure found within the fascinating world of quilts. Examples of the quilting medium will be showcased.
