GRAND CHUTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – One person was killed in a crash Wednesday during a call for service by Grand Chute police.
According to Community Resource Officer Dylan Davis, at approximately 2:10 p.m. officers from the Grand Chute Police Department responded to a call for service in the 3000 block of W. Wisconsin Avenue.
“During the course of that investigation, there was a motor vehicle crash that resulted in a fatality,” Davis said.
Pursuant to Wisconsin state law, any time an individual dies during the course of a law enforcement investigation, an outside agency is called upon to investigate that incident. This incident is being jointly investigated by the Wisconsin State Patrol and the Wisconsin Department of Justice, Division of Criminal Investigations.
In a news release, the Wisconsin DOJ said the incident began with a report of an individual committing retail theft at the Fleet Farm located at 3035 W. Wisconsin Avenue.
Officers arrived on scene and approached the subject, who then fled from the parking lot in a vehicle traveling “at a high rate of speed.” After driving about two blocks away, the individual lost control of the vehicle, struck another vehicle and crashed into a tree, according to the DOJ.
Lifesaving measures were attempted, but the subject died at the scene. The two occupants of the struck vehicle were taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.
Per agency policy, the involved officer was placed on administrative leave. The DOJ said the officer’s squad car was equipped with a camera during the incident.
Reports will be turned over to the Outagamie County District Attorney at the conclusion of the investigation.
