(WTAQ-WLUK) — Three more Northeast Wisconsin companies have signed a pledge to use 100% of the fish they catch.
Lindal Fisheries of Sturgeon Bay, Dramm Corp. of Manitowoc and Dan’s Fish Inc. of Sturgeon Bay are the latest to sign the 100% Great Lakes Fish Pledge. The announcement was made Thursday by the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Governors and Premiers.
Backers of the pledge say that after fish are processed into food, as much as 60% is thrown away.
Uses for inedible parts of fish include fertilizer, cosmetics and health supplements. Fish skin can even be used for a type of leather.
“My family has been involved with commercial fishing on Wisconsin waters for over 100 years. We do not take the opportunity to do so, or this resource for granted,” Dan Lindal, owner of Lindal Fisheries, said in a news release. “We are strong advocates for the preservation and sustainability of the fishery, and consider this pledge to be a privilege and a great business opportunity to share ideas and technology with other like-minded businesses.”
“Dramm Corporation is very excited to sign the ‘100% Great Lakes Fish Pledge’ and is committed to continuing to collaborate with its partners on both sides of the Great Lakes to achieve this goal,” Fritz Dramm, fertilizer production and compliance manager, said. “Drammatic liquid fish fertilizer is not only a great input for organic agriculture and helpful bio-stimulant for soil, but it also provides for an ecologically sound recovery of nutrients which would otherwise be lost to conventional methods of waste collection.”
“Dan’s Fish, Inc. has been and will continue to be committed to the 100% use of fish being harvested from the Great Lakes,” owner Dan Schwarz said. “With the inclusion of our company to this project, it only reemphasizes our commitment to this worthy goal.”
