GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Northeast Wisconsin’s cold winter days can be hard on humans. It can be tough on wildlife, too.
The Bay Beach Wildlife Sanctuary relies on community support to help both protect and rescue animals. Curator Lori Bankson shared advice on what you should do if you come across a critter, big or small.
Bankson says the two most common calls are for animals hit by a car or found frozen in the snow. Bankson says to use all necessary safety precautions when approaching an injured animal. For assistance, call Animal Care at (920) 391-3685.
“Wear gloves, wrap them up safely, and get them in someplace warm,” said Bankson. “Don’t put any water on their wounds, don’t wash anything, but also be very carful because if they’re scared, there is a chance they might bite.”
You can also help by feeding birds so they don’t starve during harsh weather.
“In winter, we don’t have the insects that are flying around normally,” said Bankson. “So if we can put suet out, or some sunflower seeds out, that would be really nice for the birds because they need that protein to survive those cold nights.”
