MENASHA, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Investigators have released the name of the Menasha police officer who fatally shot a man earlier this month.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation says Officer Derrick Rotta shot Kenneth R. Blevins, 43, on Oct. 7.
DCI says police were called to the 1100 block of Geneva Road for a report of a domestic dispute. When they arrived, officers encountered a man armed with what DCI calls “bladed weapons.” Rotta then shot Blevins. Efforts to save Blevins’ life failed and he died at the scene.
No law enforcement officers were injured.
Police from both the Menasha and Fox Crossing departments were on scene. DCI says they were equipped with body cameras and squad vehicle cameras.
DCI is leading the investigation. State law requires that an outside agency investigate whenever a law enforcement officer uses deadly force.
When the investigation is finished, it will be forwarded to the Winnebago County District Attorney’s Office to determine whether Rotta will face criminal charges.
Rotta, who has more than four years of law enforcement experience, was placed on administrative leave, per department policy.
Online court records show Blevins had been charged with methamphetamine charges in Winnebago County. Those charges were dismissed after his death.
