TOWN OF NEWTON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A new career summit is sowing the seeds of opportunity in the agriculture industry.
The Farm Wisconsin Discovery Center in Manitowoc County held its first Ag Industry Career Summit Friday.
Sixty high school age students from Northeast Wisconsin were able to explore the community of careers built around farming, including IT and food, fuel, and fiber production.
Students took part in interactive exhibits, various STEM activities and observed demonstrations of modern-day equipment and processes.
Farm Wisconsin Discovery Center program director, Abigail Winkel, says while farming is really crucial to agriculture, the industry also needs people to support the farmers like welders, mechanics, nutritionists and marketing specialists.
“It’s really important to offer up opportunities for students to learn about careers in agriculture because we need people in agriculture. Agriculture is really essential in our state. One in nine jobs here in Wisconsin are related to agriculture and we need folks to fill those positions,” she said.
More than 40 sponsors helped put on the event.
