KIMBERLY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An intersection that has been closed for construction since mid-July is set to reopen to traffic on Monday, the Outagamie County Highway Department announced.
In a $1.86 million project, the former signalized intersection of County Highway CE (E. College Avenue) and Railroad Street in the village of Kimberly has been reconstructed.
It will instead be a Restricted Crossing U-Turn (RCUT) intersection — a safety countermeasure supported by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) intended to reduce left-turn crashes.
The RCUT intersection was chosen as the preferred alternative after input from both the public and local officials was considered.
Outagamie County’s Highway Department says the RCUT is a cost-effective solution that will maintain all existing traffic movements and cause minimal impact to adjacent properties.
Additional items of work in the project include grading, base aggregate, asphalt pavement, curb and gutter, sidewalk, culvert pipe, storm sewer, pavement markings, signs, traffic signals and street lighting.
More information on RCUT intersections can be found on the FHWA website.
