GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An annual marathon is not just a one day event, but keeps giving back throughout year.
Organizers of the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon presented checks to its three charity partners Friday.
The 2023 marathon, which happened in May, raised $50,000 for Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin, Greater Green Bay YMCA and New Community Shelter.
CEO of the New Community Shelter in Green Bay, Terri Refsguard, says the money will go toward its community meal program, which continues to grow in demand.
“The financial donation is amazing, it’s necessary for us, but the bigger payoff for us is the ability, the opportunity for our residents to volunteer for the event. Our people are always looking for ways to give back to the community, because they’ve received so much during their stay,” she said.
Of the $50,000 donation, $20,000 will go to Feeding America of Eastern Wisconsin.
Philanthropy manager with Feeding America of Eastern Wisconsin, Leslie Asare, says for every $1 people donate to the organization, it buys four meals for those in need.
“So when you think about $20,000, that’s 80,000 meals for people,” Asare said.
Since its inception in 2000, the event has donated more than $1.7 million to 25 local charity partners.
Registration information for the 2024 Cellcom Green Bay Marathon will be available in the coming weeks.
