GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Officials in Brown County are implementing a coordinated traffic safety mission throughout the month of September to reduce acts of reckless driving.
In a news conference on Thursday, Mayor Eric Genrich of the city of Green Bay cited several recent high-profile reckless driving incidents in the area, such as a fatal accident in Allouez and the Main Street Commons building crash.
Chris Davis, chief of the Green Bay Police Department, said that on selected days in the coming weeks, numerous law enforcement agencies will be conducting focused efforts to address three main buckets: speeding, reckless driving, and impaired driving.
Other violations include street racing, not wearing seatbelts, and “any additional and dangerous behavior that could result in injury or death to the driver or others.”
Teaming up for this initiative is Ashwaubenon Public Safety, the Brown County Sheriff’s Office, Green Bay Police Department, and the Wisconsin State Patrol, as well as financial assistance from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation.
“Reckless driving and excessive speed puts everyone at risk. The decisions you make as a driver can have irrevocable impacts on you, other road users, their families, and our whole community. Too often, our officers have to deliver terrible news to a family that has suffered irrecoverable loss as a result of dangerous driving behavior,” Davis said in a media release.
“We aren’t immune from the nationwide problems of speeding and reckless driving here in the Green Bay area,” added Mayor Genrich. “Thankfully the Green Bay Police Department is working every day to crack down on this dangerous behavior, and with the assistance of our regional and statewide law enforcement partners, their positive impact will be even greater in the weeks ahead.”
