GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Sports is more than just winning and losing, it’s about learning who you are and what you can contribute to your team and to society.
That was the focus at a special training session for local high school coaches and athletic directors at Lambeau Field Wednesday.
More than 150 coaches, athletic directors, and school administrators across Northeast Wisconsin attended the InsideOut Initiative.
It’s a national movement to reclaim the educational value of high school sports.
“It uses sports as a context for it but it’s really about the human growth and development. It’s about making sure that our student-athletes are prepared and ready to enter the world and make a difference on behalf of all people,” said Joe Ermann, the co-founder of InsideOut.
The training encourages high school coaches to think about the impact they have and gain a greater awareness of the true purpose and value sports can have on student athletes.
“I think sports is in a crisis in this country. We’ve kind of lost our ball in the weeds, if you will, and I think this has been tremendously popular across the country as we’ve reclaimed that value. There are four fundamental questions every coach needs to answer: Why do I coach? Why do I coach the way that I do? What does if feel like to be coached by me? And then how do I define success?”
The InsideOut movement partners with NFL teams across the country and state athletic associations to offer the training locally.
