GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) — The Green Bay Wisconsin Lodge #2 Fraternal Order of Police is hosting the first Cops and Kids Back to School event on Monday.
Funded by local sponsors, children in families facing financial hardships will be paired up with an officer and enjoy breakfast at McDonald’s before shopping for new school supplies and clothes at Walmart.
This is the first year of this event, although it is similar to the annual Shop with a Cop event that happens every year around the winter holiday season.
“We’re only having 20 kids this year, but we’re hoping to grow that as we go along,” said Sergeant Michael Calmes of the Brown County Sheriff’s Office. “During Shop with a Cop we get up to 100 kids during that Christmas event, and we’re hoping to maybe get up to that with this as well.”
Calmes said not only does this help the kids with their school supplies, but it’s a good community-builder because kids and the general public get to see police engaging with the community in a non-threatening circumstance.
