(WTAQ-WLUK) — Sturgeon are gearing up for a second spawning run on the Wolf River and a first run on rivers flowing into Lake Michigan.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says the fish have been seen “porpoising” — an activity that indicates they are ready to spawn — at Bamboo Bend in Shiocton and below the Shawano Dam. However, the DNR says, the fish are gathering on the non-public side of the river.
Sturgeon from the Winnebago System spawned for a few days last month when the weather was warm, but the cold snap that followed shut down the activity.
Meanwhile, the DNR says sturgeon from Lake Michigan can be seen from the viewing platform below the Peshtigo Dam. The DNR also expects spawning to begin at the De Pere Dam any day.
Spawning this late in the season typically does not last long, the DNR says.
