GRAND CHUTE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — A red flag warning for wildfire danger continues as Thursday brings more warm, dry conditions.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources map shows the southern two-thirds of the state in “extreme” or “very high” fire danger. The DNR has canceled all burning permits for the day.
The Grand Chute Fire Department has also issued a burning ban through 8 a.m. Sunday. It includes grills, smokers and any natural gas- or propane-fueled device.
The DNR also advises that campfires, ashes from fireplaces, outdoor grills, smoking, chainsaws, off-road vehicles or other small engines all have the potential to throw sparks and cause wildfires.
Gov. Tony Evers has declared a state of emergency in response to the fire danger.
The DNR says it responded to 21 wildfires burning more than 2,500 acres on Wednesday. That includes a fire that burned about 100 acres in Juneau County near Necedah. The DNR said Thursday morning that fire was contained.
