ALLOUEZ, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – Heavy rain totals and melting snow caused flooding for parts of our area. Trails were closed at multiple Allouez parks due to high levels of water. The ones at Green Isle Park were among those affected.
“I was just planning on going for a walk but then I saw the trail was closed because it’s all full of water,” Taylor Steffel said.
Steffel went to the park to try to take a walk with her dog when she found out that she wouldn’t be able to access the trail.
“It was a little surprising so I guess we’re going to have to somewhere else today for our walk,” Steffel said.
She’s been to Green Isle Park before, and it’s one of her favorites in the area.
“There’s always a lot of nice people on trails walking with their dogs and just, nice and quiet,” Steffel said.
But she had never experienced issues like this.
“It’s just muddy sometimes but I’ve never seen it closed before.”
Which meant walkers were forced to find other places to get their outdoor recreation time.
“Love getting out here by the Fox River, beautiful out here, lot of birds, love to see the seasons change,” Jerry Westerman said. “And they keep this trail in good shape.”
Due to the conditions at Green Isle Park, Marsha Schroeder and Jerry Westerman choose to go to Fox River Trail instead.
“It’s perfect, perfect and they stay on top it, do a good job of maintaining it,” Westerman said.
“There’s a little bit of a muddy stretch down there but that’s only when you get off the main trail,” Schroeder said.
Westerman and Schroder said it wasn’t surprising that the Green Isle trails were closed.
“I’d like to use- go on some other trails but during the winter, early spring, you know, it’s just nice to walk on a path that’s like this,” Westerman said.
“They clean this off, plow it so it’s in good shape,” Schroeder said.
The village of Allouez has faced long-term challenges with flooding in parks. On Sunday, trails at Riverview Park and Kiwanis Park were also closed.
