FOND DU LAC, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – A man who killed his grandmother because she reported him to police was sentenced Wednesday to 13 years, six months in prison.
Greg Spittel was convicted of second-degree reckless homicide and several other counts, including obstruction.
Fond du Lac County Judge Paul Czisny also placed Spittel on extended supervision for seven and a half years.
According to the criminal complaint, Spittel was upset with his grandmother Carol Foreman, 75, for giving information to police which resulted in his arrest and to lose custody of his children.
The attack happened on Aug. 23, 2019, in the city of Waupun.
Spittel asked a neighbor to call 911 the next day. Foreman was taken to the hospital, where she died a few days later of “multiple blunt force injuries,” the complaint states.
Spittel addressed the court during the hearing.
“There’s not a day that goes by that Grandma’s not on my mind. I miss my best friend dearly, and I cannot tell my family how sorry I am that she was taken from them too early. After my traumatic brain injury in May of 2019, I have suffered severe memory issues. Along with the abundance of alcohol, I honestly do not remember what happened to Grandma.”
Spittel also said he is seeking treatment for alcohol abuse and is also taking technical college classes.
