SUAMICO, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — Getting outdoors and camping are popular past times and part of “How WI Live” in Wisconsin. A brand new campground at the NEW Zoo in Suamico is already becoming a popular place.
The Reforestation Camp Campground opened on June 3. Byron Fleener drove all the way from Texas to check it out.
“My girlfriend and I were coming here to visit her family, and going online, she had noticed they built the Reforestation Camp. They had reservations available, so I jumped on it,” said Fleener, Wichita Falls, Texas.
The 51-site facility offers various amenities, like water and electricity. Fleener says parking his 40-foot-long RV was no problem.
“This is nice, and gravel pads are great. A lot of times they’re not developed at all. They’re just dirt. And then when you get a lot of rain, they get muddy and stuff. So, we don’t have that issue here. New tables. All the services are good,” he said.
“The campground project has really been a three-decade-in-the-making project. So, we’re happy to have it implemented, happy to have it open,” said Matt Kriese, Brown County Parks Director.
Kriese says staying at the Reforestation Camp Campground is a unique experience.
“It is really a .4-mile walk to our NEW Zoo and Adventure Park. Close enough to all our trails. So, what we’re finding is campers are enjoying walking to the NEW Zoo, enjoy the adventure park, the zoo. Bring their bikes along, taking a ride out on the bike trails. And, also, jumping in their vehicle and going and visiting the sights and sounds of Green Bay,” he said.
Rustic sites are $22 per night, and those sites with amenities are $32 per night. Fleener says he’s sold.
“If I was in the area, or even from out of the area, looking for a place to stay — it’s got good amenities, the price is good. I would definitely recommend this to other people. We will be back when we come back to Green Bay,” he said.
The Reforestation Camp Campground is the third county-owned campground in Brown County.
The others are found at Bay Shore Park, near New Franken, and the Brown County Fairgrounds in De Pere.
