HOBART, WI (WTAQ) — There’s been a bear spotted, maybe even two, in Brown County.
The Village of Hobart is telling residents that a black bear has been spotted in the village. A Howard resident photographed a black bear Thursday morning.
“It’s not uncommon,” said Aaron Buchholz with the Wisconsin DNR. “Especially in the Green Bay area but even in areas further south for bears to show up, especially this time of year. We’re in their breeding season right now.”
If you find yourself in a bear encounter and can’t avoid it, there are some tips to follow.
“Make some noise, wave your arms, and make sure that bear has a place to run away, and typically they will,” Buchholz told WTAQ. “You never want to run away from a bear. Back away slowly.”
He says you should particularly avoid female bears traveling with their cubs.
They’re looking for food including garbage cans and especially bird feeders, which you should remove if there are bears in the area.
