GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – Joannes Aquatic Center is opening this afternoon for the first time in over two years.
“Breaking news – Joannes Aquatic Center will be opening today at 2:00 p.m…To have our two largest facilities open, especially as another heat wave comes through, it’s really a great feeling knowing we can provide that service,” said Green Bay Parks Recreation Supervisor, Ann Moeller. ” They are currently training all of our new staff from 12-2 today…We are so excited to have Joannes open again. It’s been two long summers without that facility open.”
However, Joannes is not fully staffed as the city is relying on some substitutes and others to pick up extra shifts.
“We have bare bones staff, but we still have staff and can get people swimming again…so our schedule might be fluid and amenities might close throughout the day and reopen, just to give our staff breaks,” Moeller told WTAQ News. “Our staff also are brand new, a lot of them. So give us a little grace as we navigate large crowds, because we are anticipating that. We’re ready, and we’re just really excited…Go with the flow. If we have to shut down a slide or have limited concessions, it’s all because of staffing. We are still hiring, we’re still hoping to get more facility attendants on board, and we have some lifeguard positions open!”
Meanwhile, Colburn Pool could open this summer if enough staff is brought on to handle the demand.
“We’re not quite there yet, obviously. Colburn Pool is not open yet for open swim, but we are offering swim lessons there. We are doing some things here and there to keep that facility going,” Moeller said. “We still need about ten more facility attendants and a handful of lifeguards. our biggest need right now are our uncertified staff, and we especially need sixteen and up to run our slides.”
