Sectional champions were crowned in the WIAA Boys State Baseball tournament on Tuesday, sending 20 teams to the championships next Tuesday and Wednesday at Fox Cities Stadium in Appleton.
In Division 1, the Bay Port Pirates secured a 14th trip to state as the 2 time champions rolled the De Pere Redbirds 11-2 on their home diamond. Bay Port won back to back titles in 2009 and 2010 and finished runner up a year ago to Sun Prairie. The Cardinals are back to defend that title after beating Waunakee 9-1. In other sectional finals, Arrowhead beat Beaver Dam 2-0, Milton got past Mukwonago 5-4, Menomonee Falls defeated Whitefish Bay 9-3, Greendale advanced 6-0 over Marquette and Westosha Central beat Franklin 5-4.
The Denmark Vikings will be back to defend their Division 2 state championship as they defeated Green Bay Notre Dame 6-0 in the sectional final. It’s the 4th state trip for Denmark. Mosinee advanced with a 10-3 win over Rice Lake, Jefferson routed Dodgeville 11-2 and Pewaukee blanked Kettle Moraine Lutheran 4-0.
In Division 3, Oconto came up one game short of state, falling to Amherst 10-0, Kenosha St. Joseph eliminated Chilton 8-2, St. Croix Falls beat Aquinas 3-0 and Cuba City advanced past Viroqua 3-2 in nine innings.
The Division 4 field includes Oakfield, a 13-6 winner over Iola-Scandanavia, Regis beat Solon Springs/Northwood 13-10, Columbus Catholic was a 5-0 winner over Rib Lake and Bangor defeated Pecatonica 9-3.
The teams in each division will be re-seeded before the tournament begins next week.
