DE PERE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) — An effort to boost the population of a popular sport fish is underway in the Green Bay area.
Wisconsin DNR biologists were out netting muskies on the Fox River in De Pere Wednesday to perform their annual spring egg collection and tagging survey.
Officials were busy collecting eggs from spawning muskies for its fish stocking program.
Wild Rose State Fish hatchery supervisor, Jesse Landwehr, says they will take the eggs collected Wednesday and raise them at the Wild Rose facility and then stock the fish back into the Green Bay system and other inland lakes.
Landwehr says the waters of Green Bay has a nice musky population which is due to some stocking that was done years ago.
“It’s a nice boost in population in a lot of our public waters of the state. Green Bay is a world-class musky fishery and we’re just helping keep that going,” he said.
The eggs are expected to hatch at the Wild Rose facility in about two weeks.
