APPLETON, WI (WTAQ) – The first Old Glory Honor Flight of 2022 will lift off from Appleton International Airport today. 100 military veterans from all branches of the service will be spending the day in Washington D-C, visiting the monuments and memorials in their honor.
The Old Glory Honor Flight has been taking NE Wisconsin veterans on all-expense paid day-trips to D-C since 2009. This is mission 56.
Veterans from Vietnam, Korea, even World War Two will be on the flight.
“A really interesting mix and it’s going to be an exciting thing with generations of veterans.”
Old Glory Executive Director Diane MacDonald says this chance to spend the day with fellow vets is often cathartic.
“Kind of a catalyst for them to talk to family and friends. We’ve had children who say my Dad never talked about his service before the honor flight.”
And things don’t end when everyone gets back. The busy day concludes with a community-invited celebration and a chance to say thanks to the veterans.
The public is invited to arrive at Appleton International Airport after 7:30 p.m. Parking is free.
The Old Glory Honor Flight is planning several trips to take local veterans to Washington D.C. throughout 2022.
